From silt to smart in sediment management
|
|
Sediment management is vital for any stormwater attenuation system. Sediment reduces flow rates and storage volume and can also act as a receptacle for pollutants.
Pollutants such as metals and hydrocarbons are particularly present in urban stormwater runoff. CIRIA reference studies suggest that up to 70% of the hydrocarbons from rural roads are attached to particles, rising to up to 98% for urban areas. Unless treated, the sediment can transport these pollutants throughout the drainage system. By removing the sediment, the attached pollutants are also removed. Smarter sediment management is therefore essential for both performance and environmental protection.

Isolator Row
ADS Isolator Row is a free, independently tested and verified water quality treatment device, inbuilt into the StormTech system. Isolator Row provides a dedicated space where sediment can settle out, effectively removing the physical sediment and the attached pollutants.
By capturing and safely isolating these particles, Isolator Row helps to prevent pollution from stormwater runoff and maintain the flow rate and storage volume of the system. For more information on Isolator Row, visit our website.

The British Water How to Guide
The British Water How to Guide highlights the importance of removing particulate phase hydrocarbons, and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), a specific type of pollutant that has a high affinity for solid phases, which means they tend to attach to sediment particles. A similar approach relates to particulate phase metals.
Isolator Row treats sediment in the first 2 stages of StormTech’s 4 treatment stages: (i) gravity separation/sedimentation; (ii) filtration and is thus a critical component in stormwater attenuation systems for smarter sediment management. Its ability to capture and isolate sediment particles helps the attenuation system maintain its efficiency and comply with environmental standards. By removing pollutants such as hydrocarbons and PAHs, metals and nutrients, Isolator Row significantly improves the water quality of stormwater runoff.
